The Smiling Cow complete with earrings was created through community art workshops and interaction between young people from Catalonia who came to Bushmills to improve their English and members of a youth club run by the Bushmills Residents & Environmental Forum. Both groups learnt about each others culture and identity. At the time the young people of Bushmills were looking for ideas to for a cross community cohesion project and this search was shared with the young people from Catalonia. They put forward the idea of a smiling cow and through a process of selection with several other suggestion, it came out as the top choice..
The work was created by Imagineers and contains symbols which are connected to the heritage, history and culture of Bushmills. You can see all the elements that have made Bushmills what it is today including the Distillery, Dunluce Castle, the Giant's Causeway, the Salmon, Market Square, War Memorial and the Corn Mills which gave the village its name. The smiling cow is a welcoming symbol and welcomes visitors from all over the world to this Conservation Villlage.
